Pando (application)

Pando is a free (funded with publicity within the application) proprietary software application that allows its users to share files via P2P. It's mainly aimed at sending e-mail attachments of large file-size, but it can also be used to share files in other ways.

Its functioning is very similar to that of BitTorrent. In fact, they use the BitTorrent protocol to transfer files privately and securely (using 256-bit end-to-end encryption)[1] among peers. It differs from BitTorrent by the fact that they use a .pando file (similar to the .torrent which is sent via e-mail or published on a website or exchanged with the recipient in some other way (such as via IM). In case it's sent by e-mail, Pando has plug-ins that help automate the upload process. The other main difference with traditional torrent exchange is that a copy of the shared file is uploaded to the Pando servers and remains there for 14 days, seeding it. In this way, the file remains available even after the sender goes offline.

To start the downloading process, the recipient must have the Pando client installed. In case the file is sent via automated e-mail attachment, instructions to download it are provided in the message.

Its main features are:

  • Available for both Windows and MacOS.
  • Provides plugins for Internet Explorer (to automate the process when attaching a file in several popular webamails) and Outlook. - currently in beta.
  • Unlimited number of uploads.
  • 1 GB maximum file size. (With subscription)
  • Statistics about number and time of downloads are provided to the sender.
