Pandalam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pandalam is one among the fastest growing towns in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala state, south India. It is a holy town, second only to Sabarimala. Sree Ayyappa, the presiding deity of Sabarimala had his human sojourn here as the son of the Raja of Pandalam.

Before proceeding to Sabarimala, pilgrims usually stop to worship the deity of Valiyakoikal Temple near the Pandalam Palace. This temple is on the banks of river Achenkovil.

Three days prior to the Makaravilaku festival, the sacred ornaments of Sree Ayyappa are taken in a procession from Pandalam to Sabarimala.Other famous temples are MahadevaTemple,Puthankavil Bhagavathi Temple at Kurampala Pattupurakkavu Devi Temple at Thonnalloor and Sree Krishna Swami Temple at Kaipuzha.

The centuries old Kadakkad Juma Masjid, the Orthodox Cathedral at Thumpamon and the St. Thomas Church at Kurampala gives this pilgrim town, the glare and glory of a secular township.

This holy town is also a well known educational and health care centre in Kerala. Pandalam has a host of educational institutions ranging from reputed schools to Post Graduate,Training and Ayurveda Medical Colleges. Pandalam had witnessed a rare piece of history when it was first converted to a muncipality and later back to a grama panchayat. This has probably hindered the growth of Pandalam. The inefficiency of Members of Legislative assembly and Parliament , who were elected from here has been identified as another reason for it. Most of the development in Pandalam was due to the founder of NSS Mannathu Padmanabhan
