Pancreas divisum is a congenital defect in which the ventral and dorsal ducts of the pancreas fail to fuse together. Normally, the dorsal duct regresses as it fuses with the ventral duct, resulting in the duct of Wirsung draining from the major papilla. In some cases, the remaining duct of Santorini will drain from the minor papilla, but this duct can atrophy. Pancreas divisum It is the most common congenital anomaly of the pancreas. Most patients are asymptomatic and there is no functional significance to the defect. However, it can result in recurrent pancreatitis in a very small number of patients.
