Panama is a city in Shelby County, Iowa, United States. The population was 212 at the 2000 census.

The community was begun as "Crandall's Station" during the construction of a railway line.

Panama is located at GR1.

The community is on State Highway 191, halfway between US-30 and US-59

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 212 people, 96 households, and 57 families residing in the city. The population density was 292.3/km² (745.0/mi²). There were 105 housing units at an average density of 144.8/km² (369.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.11% White, 0.47% African American, and 1.42% from two or more races.
There were 96 households out of which 21.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 3.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% were non-families. 36.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $55,000. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $25,556 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,078. About 3.4% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 14.0% of those sixty five or over.
