Talk:Pales

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name may be related to phallus meaning "penis" [citation needed].

I have moved this uncited (and rather dubious) claim to the Talk page until a citation can be found for it. No point just assuming it's correct and leaving it on the page when it could be original research or even vandalism; a citation shouldn't be hard to find, if one exists. -Silence 22:15, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
It's probably not vandalism, because it dates back to User:Tucci528 (now User:TUF-KAT). However, it appears to be a dubious etymology in any case. The ancient Greek word phallos is considered to derive from PIE *bhel-, "to swell". In Latin, PIE *bh generally became f, sometimes b; p would be an oddity, perhaps a loan.
