Palos Hills is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,665 at the 2000 census. It is the home of Moraine Valley Community College.

Palos Hills is located at 41°41′57″N, 87°49′35″W (41.699282, -87.826257)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.65%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 17,665 people, 7,320 households, and 4,772 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,635.6/km² (4,239.7/mi²). There were 7,492 housing units at an average density of 693.7/km² (1,798.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.18% White, 5.48% African American, 0.11% Native American, 2.67% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.57% from other races, and 2.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.83% of the population.

There were 7,320 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $52,329, and the median income for a family was $61,764. Males had a median income of $44,322 versus $31,929 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,331. About 2.1% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.
