[edit] Areas and Districts
Palmont encompasses four major sections: Downtown, Fortuna, Kempton and Silverton. Bordering Palmont are three canyons: East Canyon, West Canyon, and Carbon Canyon, for which the game is named. Although it is inaccessible at the beginning, as the player continues through career mode, Silverton becomes unlocked. San Juan is a special district that is not on the main map but is reachable in races.
[edit] Downtown
Downtown made for Tuner cars, is controlled by Kenji's crew, Bushido, and is to the east. Downtown is based on San Francisco, San Diego and other cities. This scene comprises 5 districts:
- Old Quarter: Heavily based off of the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, California.
- Historic Chinatown: A district of decorative gateways and neon advertisements.
- Mason District: A neighborhood of hotels, resorts, and turn-of-the-century architecture.
- Billing District: The financial hub of Downtown Palmont.
- Kings Park: Loosely based of of Balboa Park of San Diego & the Presidio in San Francisco.

[edit] Silverton
Silverton is a casino area controlled by Darius's crew, Stacked Deck, in the north. Silverton is based on Las Vegas and the hotels are inspired by the other casino themes. For example, the Troy hotel is a spoof of Caesar's Palace, the Mirror hotel is spoof off of the Mirage hotel, a hotel of unknown name which looks similar to the Stratosphere is present, and the London is based off of New York, New York. This scene comprises 7 districts:
- Starlight Strip: Based off of Las Vegas's Freemont Street area of casinos.
- Shady Pine: Relatively decent area, home ot Silverton's exhibition halls.
- Silverton Refinery: Oil refinery in northeast Silverton.
- Diamond Hills: High-class estates in the desert foothills.
- Neon Mile: Obviously represents the neon-clad Strip in Las Vegas
- Infinity Park: An area of parking garages and decent apartments.
- Canmor Downs: Silverton's thoroughbred race track and other amities.
[edit] San Juan
This is a small district only used in a few races and is not available to drive in during the game. In the demo of the game you can only race in San Juan. The area was originally designed to be apart of the rest of the city, but there was not enough room. San Juan would have been located northeast of Silverton, and is based heavily off of cities such as Albequerque, Phoenix, and Tuscon.
[edit] Canyons
Note that the canyons are not accessible by free roam. Only for Sprint, Drift, and Canyon races.
This scene comprises 3 areas:
- East Canyon
- West Canyon
- Carbon Canyon
[edit] Highways
There are many fictional highways in Palmont City, which also features an Interstate. (Highway 142 & Highway 55).
[edit] Geography
Palmont exists alongside of Rockport, which was used in Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
There are three major canyons in Palmont, East, West and Carbon canyon. A major coastal area covers the southwestern part of the city. There are also some major rivers and a lake near Carbon Canyon. A dam can be seen spoofing Hoover Dam as it's near casinos.
It is also speculated that Palmont was the city Need for Speed: Underground used.
[edit] Police force
Much like Rockport, little is known about Palmont's police department, except for its patrol cars. Like their Rockport counterparts, the force has been known to be highly aggressive when pursuing highly wanted suspects on the road, employing multiple tactics to stop suspects. The police vehicles issued to the city are listed as followed:
- Standard and Undercover Ford Crown Victoria-like police cars (civic/local police) They are nissans but it is not revealed what model i they are.
- Pursuit specific police cars, including Pontiac GTOs (state police) and Chevrolet Corvette C6s (federal police and a unique unit driven by Sergeant Cross).
- Police "Rhino" SUVs possibly representing a hybrid mix of various SUV's.
However, unlike in Most Wanted, Undercover Federal Corvette units are regulated to two Challenge Series tasks and Police Helicopters are never seen in Pursuit except in the arrest of the player should the player get busted by the police.
Also in the game, when you "recruit" Samson, he explains that a Chrysler 300C that aided your escape in the beginning was actually an unmarked police car.
Police vehicles are split into levels, which get tougher and tougher with each level, and are also split into Undercover levels. The police can also for example throw out spike strips in their quest to arrest the driver.
There are 5 heat levels. In the first heat level, you are being pursued by civic cruisers. You have no chance of encountering a roadblock or spike strip. In the second heat level, you are being pursued by the civic cruisers again, but this time they are undercover. There will be roadblocks, but no spike strips. For type 1 cars, the heat stops here. In the third heat level, you are being pursued by state police cars. You will encounter roadblocks and a light rhino (police SUV). Rhinos charge at you head-on to stop you and let pusuing vehicles surround you and bust you. In the fourth heat level, you are being pursued by the state police cars again, but this time they are undercover. You will encounter roadblocks, spike strips, and light/heavy rhinos. In the fifth heat level, you are being pursued by federal pursuit vehicles (Corvettes with nitous). You will encounter many roadblocks, spike strips, and many heavy rhinos. The heat stops here for type 2 and type 3 cars. The higer the heat; the harder it will be to disable cop cars. There is heat level 7 in challenge series but not in career mone or online.
