Palmeiras de Goiás is a small city and municipality in southestern Goiás state, Brazil.

Palmeiras de Goiás is located in the Vale do Rio dos Bois Microregion at a distance of 88 kilometers from the state capital, Goiânia. It is 26 kilometers from Cezarina and the important BR-060 highway. Connections with Goiânia are made by GO-060 / Trindade / GO-050 / Campestre de Goiás / GO-156. [1]

In January 2005 the Mayor was Ernani Lopes. There were 9 members on the city council and 15,563 eligible voters in April 2006.

In 2005 the population density was 12.06 inhab/km². In 2003 there were 13,983 people living in the urban area and 4,205 people living in the rural area. The population has decreased by about 4,000 people since 1980.

The main economic activity is cattle raising, with a predominamce of mini-fundios. The cultivated area is approximately 1,500 km². The main products grown are corn, rice, cotton, soybeans, beans, tomato, oranges, and guava. There are some small industries producing cotton byproducts, clothing, and furniture. In 2005 there were 34 industrial units and 163 commercial units. There was 1 meat-packing plant--Indústria e Comércio de Carnes Minerva Ltda.--and 1 dairy--Coop. Agropecuária Mista de Palmeiras Ltda. There were 3 fincancial institutions: Banco do Brasil S.A. - Banco Itaú S.A. - CEF.

In 2003 the economic sectors employing most workers were: transformation industries--173 workers; construction--260 workers; commerce--586 workers; and public administration--432 workers.

In 2004 there were 1,653 automobiles.

In 2004 there were 143.720 head of cattle, 64,430 head of poultry, and 12,430 head of swine. The main agricultural products were cotton (2,500 hectares), rice (5,000 hectares), bananas, rubber, sugarcane, manioc, guava (280 hectares), oranges, corn (5,000 hectares), soybeans (12,500 hectares), and tomatoes.

In 2003 there were 2 hospitals with 215 beds and 6 ambulatory health clinics. In 2002 there were 17 doctors, 5 nurses, and 5 dentists. In 2000 the infant mortality rate was 15.54--below the national average of 33.0.

In 2005 the school system had 16 schools, 113 classrooms, 245 teachers, and 5,224 students. There were 822 students attending 3 middle schools. In 2000 the adult literacy rate was 87.7%--above the national average of 86.4%. The Universidade Estadual de Goiás maintains a campus in the city and there were 336 students enrolled in 2003.
