- 'Palanka' is also a character that is featured in the Practical Chinese Reader, a popular textbook used for teaching Mandarin Chinese.
- Palanka is a term used to refer to letters of support[citation needed] from friends and family for Catholic communicants as they prepare for confirmation; strengthening them as they approach their commitment - interestingly this may be derived from the Turkish usage as part of a stronghold to a military encampment - or perhaps that usage pre-dates to earlier Byzantine Greek use.
