Patterson after hunting in Africa.

Paige Patterson (* 1942; † ) is a Southern Baptist theologian who was president of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina (1992-2003), and is currently the eighth president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Patterson is a third generation Southern Baptist preacher who received his B.A. from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and a Th.M. and Ph.D. of theology studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Patterson was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention twice. He started preaching while still in his teens and has visited countries on five continents, leading Bible studies and conducting missionary work.

Patterson is best known for his role in the Conservative Resurgence of the SBC during the late 1970s and 1980s. Recognizing that the SBC president could (albeit through a lengthy process) influence the direction of the SBC, starting in 1979, Patterson led Southern Baptist conservatives to elect convention presidents, beginning with Adrian Rogers.

The conservatives that Patterson led were known for their tenacity to further their cause. By the time Patterson took over as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the seminary's leadership required that all faculty sign a statement of faith that consisted of traditional Christian orthodoxy (e.g., deity of Christ, doctrine of the Trinity, etc.) as well as the inerrancy of the Bible.

Patterson is also well known for his African hunting expeditions. Patterson's home and office display dozens of rare and exotic animals that he reports personally killing, such as the leopard[1] shown above. Currently, Dr. Patterson is involved extensively in Christian sportsman banquets throughout the United States. Using PowerPoint presentations on hunting dangerous game and emphasizing the critical importance of fathers in the task of making responsible men from the mischievous raw material of boys, he has rejoiced over more than 2,000 men coming to Christ through these banquets in the last two years. These events develop naturally out of his love for the "outback," his exploits in hunting (he has taken lion, leopards, and buffalo, or three of the African "big five").
