Pahawh Hmong script

The Pahawh Hmong script is an alphabet writing system for the Hmong language invented by Shong Lue Yang in 1959. Shong Lue Yang and many others believed that the script was given to him by God. The Pahawh Hmong script is written from left to right.

  • 164 characters.
  • Although the syllables are pronounced with the consonant first, in each syllable the vowel is actually written before the consonant.
  • The 8 tones of the Hmong language are distinguished with diacritics.
  • The digits 0-9 are all represented. There is also a single character for the number 10.
  • Graphical appearance:
    • Vertical and horizontal lines are more common than diagonal lines
    • Curved lines
    • Small loops and circles
