The 24th Caprice for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini, itself a set of theme and variations, has provided a rich seam of material for works by subsequent composers. Compositions based on it include:
- No. 6 of Grandes Etudes de Paganini S141 (1838, revised 1851) for solo piano, by Franz Liszt
- Variations on a Theme of Paganini op. 35 (1862-63) for solo piano, by Johannes Brahms
- Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini op. 43 (1934) for piano and orchestra, by Sergei Rachmaninoff
- Variations on a Theme by N Paganini (1947), for orchestra, by Boris Blacher
- Variations on a Theme by Paganini (1940-41), for two pianos, by Witold Lutosławski, also arranged (in 1978) for piano and orchestra
- Caprice XXIV, by Benny Goodman
- Variations (1977) by Andrew Lloyd Webber, originally for cello and rock band, later also arranged for cello and orchestra
