In 1951 an "arraial" (settlement) was formed with the name of Barro Alto, located 12 kilometers west of the Maranhão River on a stream called Côrrego Barro Alto. The name "Padre Bernardo" became official in 1955 in tribute to the parish priest of Luziânia, Bernardo Stockler, who constantly visited the new town to celebrate weddings, baptisms and attend the religious needs of the local population. Padre Stockler died in 1955 and is buried in the church of Luziânia.
