[edit] Naming terms
"Commonly used packet filters are ipf, ipfw or pf for Unix and iptables or ipchains for Linux." IPFW and PF were initially designed for BSD systems, and BSD systems (as well as Linux) are technically "Unix-like". I would suggest it be changed to "... IPF, IPFW, or PF for *BSD and iptables or ipchains for Linux", but at least IPF runs on more than just BSD systems. Still, the naming as it stands seems not entirely correct.

[edit] merge articles?
I feel that some specific content here could go into Firewall (networking), but this page should remain to document the difference between a "proper firewall" and a mere "packet filter", and to point people to the main article. - Paul 16:31, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
