The Pacific Sun (formerly Jubilee) is a holiday class cruise ship built in 1986. At 47,000-tons, Pacific Sun is a medium sized ship, accommodating up to 1,900 passengers from Australia. Pacific Sun currently operates on 7 to 13-night itineraries to the South Pacific and Queensland. Pacific Sun's final cruise from Sydney will correspond to the 2007 Melbourne Cup, during which the ship will rendezvous with Pacific Dawn, its replacement in Sydney. From November 2007, Pacific Sun will relocate to Brisbane, to become Queensland’s latest liner. It is predicted that the cruises carried out by the vessel will remain essentially the same.

[edit] Background

The vessel was constructed for Carnival Cruise Lines and entered operation in 1986 as Jubilee. Jubilee was one of three Holiday class ships constructed for Carnival, along with sister ships Holiday and Celebration. In 2004, the vessel was transferred to P&O Cruises Australian fleet, and was renamed Pacific Sun.

Pacific Sun is currently the largest cruise ship ever to be based in Australia. The vessel currently operates out of Sydney, and will do so until November 2007. At that time, Pacific Sun will relocate to Brisbane.

P&O Cruises Managing director, Mr Smith said in a press statement released on the company's website - “Basing Pacific Sun in Brisbane is an exciting step for P&O Cruises and furthers our commitment to Queensland cruising. It provides the opportunity for 500 more passengers to join each cruise and sail direct from Brisbane to a wealth of destinations in the South Pacific and tropical Queensland”.
