[edit] History

PNCA was created in 1909 as part of the Portland Art Museum, and remained "The Museum Art School" until 1980. That year the school changed its name to reflect an independence from the museum. In April 1994 the school formally split from the Art Museum to become the Pacific Northwest College of Art, a fully independent institution. In 1998 the College moved away from its shared space in the Art Museum to its present campus in Portland Pearl District.

[edit] Faculty

PNCA employs 14 full-time faculty (nine tenured), 34 part-time faculty, and a small number of Continuing Education faculty, totalling about 50. Many faculty members have local and (in some cases) national reputations as artists, and regularly exhibit their work.

[edit] Students

2005/2006 enrollment in the BFA program is about 275 full-time students. Most students (86%) are between 18 and 29 years old. The Continuing Education program serves more than 2,500 students part-time per year.

[edit] Facilities

PNCA is primarily located in a cluster of leased buildings in close-in Northwest Portland. The primary campus building and ancillary teaching facilities in nearby buildings total 92,000 square feet. The campus includes three public exhibition galleries and three for student art.

[edit] Leadership

Since July 2003, PNCA has been led by Dr. Thomas Manley, an expert in Asian Studies with a 22-year background at the Claremont Colleges, mainly at Pitzer College.
