PacBell Building

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PacBell Building or 140 New Montgomery Street in San Francisco's South of Market district is a Neo-Gothic, 133 m (435 feet) office tower located close to the St. Regis Museum Tower and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The 26-floor building was completed in 1925 and was San Francisco's first significant skyscraper development when construction began in 1924. The building was the tallest in San Francisco until the 'twin' Russ Building was completed two years later in 1927. For many years, the PacBell Building and the nearby Russ Building were the tallest and most prominent buildings in San Francisco. However, that fact greatly changed with Manhattanization from 1960-1990, leaving the Russ Building hidden in the Financial District skyscrapers. A new wave of buildings from 2000 onwards has surrounded the PacBell Building as well. The building is illuminated at night.
