P. S. Your Cat Is Dead!
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
P.S. Your Cat is Dead! is a play by James Kirkwood, adapted from his 1970 novel of the same name.
Jimmy Zoole's New Year's Eve is far more tragic than happy - his one-man version of Hamlet (performed with hand puppets) has flopped, his girlfriend has left him, his cat is ill, and his unfinished novel has been stolen. So when he finds yet another burglar, a gay man named Vito, hiding in his apartment, he ties him up and uses him as an outlet for his many frustrations. Before long, Vito is sharing his own trials and tribulations and, as the two get to know each other, Jimmy begins to question his own sexual identity.
After five previews, the Broadway production, directed by Vivian Matalon, opened on April 7, 1975 at the John Golden Theatre, where it ran for 16 performances. The cast included Keir Dullea, Tony Musante, and Jennifer Warren.
Drama Desk Award nominations went to Kirkwood for Outstanding New Play and Musante for Outstanding Actor in a Play.
A feature film version, directed by Steve Guttenberg and starring Guttenberg, Cynthia Watros, and Shirley Knight, was screened at the 2002 Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival.
