Přemysl Sobotka

Mr. Přemysl Sobotka (born May 18, 1944, Mladá Boleslav) is a Czech Republic politician, as President of the Senate of the Czech Republic (since 2004) is ceremonialy the second highest representant of the country.
After the Nazi occupation during World War II his family moved to Liberec where his father was respected and popular teacher and where P. Sobotka still lives. Mr. Sobotka graduated at Faculty of Medicin of Charles University in 1968 (MUDr., i.e. M.D.) and worked as a surgeon at the Liberec Hospital, 1991–1996 Head of Radiology Department.
His political career started in the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He was a member of the „for-all“ Civic Forum and joined the right-winged Civic Democratic Party after its foundantion in 1991, he is a chairman of its Liberec regional organisation.
He served as Councillor of the City of Liberec 1990–1998 and was elected member of the Senate for the constituency Liberec in the first Senate election held in 1996 (shortened term, 2yrs), re-elect 1998 and 2004 (full terms, 6yrs). Colleague Senators elected him Vice President of this chamber multiple times and on December 15, 2004, he was elected President of the Senate (term 2yrs).
