Pérez is a Spanish-language surname. It was originally a patronymic meaning "son of Peter" (Pedro or Pero in Old Castilian), its English equivalent being Peterson. The surname is extremely common throughout the Hispanic world. The Portuguese equivalent of the surname is Peres or Pires, and it becomes Peris in Valencian.
