[edit] Studies and career

After obtaining an MA degree in psychology at New York University in 2002, Pål Johan Karlsen completed a PhD in psychology at the University of Oslo, Norway, in 2004.

His first book, Daimler, a novel published in 2002, explores a middle-aged, married man's attempt to establish an intimate relationship with a fourteen-year-old boy, Sturla, the great talent in the local cross-country skiing club. The main character, Daniel Grimsgaard, has inherited a devastating, degenerative brain disorder that slowly kills him - Huntington's Disease. The title of the book alludes to the veteran car that Daniel and Sturla are restoring together - the Daimler SP 250, a shiny red two-seated cabriolet.
