THE COLLEGE
Oxley College is an independent, co-educational, secondary day school, founded on Christian principles. The education of Oxley students takes place in expansive grounds of immense beauty. The graceful, colonial homestead 'Elvo', built in the 1880s houses the Head's study and the administrative offices.
Today, the grounds occupy seven hectares with abundant trees, many of which were planted when the property was first occupied and provide a magnificent environment in which to learn. Since the College began, there has been an endeavour to design and locate facilities in order to convey a sense of openness and challenge in learning, and to provide sensitivity to, and respect for, beauty in the natural environment.
The College takes its name from the famous early Australian explorer, John Oxley and nestles at the foot of a hill named after him. His descendants gave permission for his family crest to be used as the basis of the College badge. It is intended that students will invest themselves with qualities of the pioneer and exhibit the principles of the Oxley motto - Patience and Fortitude - in striving to attain the highest goals.
The College first opened to students in 1983 with an initial enrolment of twenty-four students. The college's founding Headmaster was Mr. David Wright, alongside Deputy Head Mr. Peter Craig, both respected Rhodesian educators. The College has now reached a total population of around five hundred. It has been the policy of the College to have classes of numbers small enough for close personal attention and for every student to feel that he or she counts.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Oxley College aims to develop in its students spiritedness and sensitivity in all that they do and think and feel. It is hoped that after their years at Oxley they will carry into their adulthood a sense of challenge, an acceptance of their responsibilities, an awareness of the needs of others and a compassion in meeting those needs. It seeks to develop the mind, the body and the spirit, recognising that in harmony they contribute to wholeness of being. Above all it hopes to engender in its students an understanding that 'being' is more important than 'having' and that it is the quality with which one thinks, feels, believes and strives which is paramount.
POLICY AND PRACTICE
The College's policies and practices have been established to develop the fundamental principles of its philosophy. High standards of dress, courtesy, conduct and involvement in College activities are expected from students, not to establish conformity but to foster loyalty to, and identification with, the principles for which the College stands. Selective mechanisms operate to underline the fact that standards matter and that realistic self-assessment is vital to becoming a properly -functioning individual. The College provides opportunities for every student to achieve. The highest achievement of all - a noble quality of person - is believed to be within reach of everyone.
A book is available, A Lovingly Woven Tapestry: Oxley College, Bowral, written by Linda Emery and published by Oxley College in 2006, which details the history of the school.
