The Oxford University Asia-Pacific Society (OUAPS), more often known simply as APS, is the largest Asian student body in the University of Oxford. It was founded in 1999 through the merger of Asia-Pacific Affairs Society (APAS) and Oxford University Pacific Rim Society (PacRim). The society aims to promote interest and understanding in the political, economic, and social development of the Asia-Pacific region, through speaker and social events relevant to Asian current affairs, issues, and customs.
[edit] Notable Speakers
Notable speakers to the society include ex-Governor of Hong Kong Lord Chris Patten, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR Donald Tsang, former deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibahim and Nobel laureate Jose Ramos Horta. Other key speakers include:
- Jackie Chan
- Jung Chang
- Wang Dan
- Gavin Menzies
- and Sir Percy Cradock
[edit] The "Oxbridge Boat Party"
It is a tradition of APS to host boat parties in London with the Cambridge student society, ABACUS (the Asscociation of British and Chinese University Students) in November every year. It is one of, if not the most, popular social gatherings to Asian students in Oxford and Cambridge.
