Overboard (comic strip)

Overboard is Chip Dunham's surreal comic strip about a shipload of pirates anachronistically placed in modern times. (For example, they put quarters in dockside parking meters.) The pirates carry cutlasses by their sides, get their treasure stolen by more competent pirates, repulse women (who run from their fleas), and generally behave as though they had failed an intelligence test.
The main characters are:
- Captain Henry Crow - the blundering skipper. Still somewhat in love with Cecilia after she attempted to seduce her way into the group to get at their treasure.
- Charlie and Seahawk - the comic straight men.
- Nate - the fearsome but gentle giant.
- Louie - Captain Crow's dog, who acts like a normal dog. He doesn't speak but rather projects thought balloons like Garfield. Louie is extremely spoiled, always helping himself to human luxuries such as beds and steaks. He seems to have a better lifestyle than the rest of the pirates and usually gets his way. He is a Labrador Retriever, as mentioned in the strip repeatedly, and many of Louie's behaviours are considered stereotypical of the breed.
- Raymond - Cecilia's dog. Unlike Louie, Raymond walks on two legs, wears a hat, smokes cigarettes, and talks directly to humans. He can also understand Louie's thought balloons.
- Cecilia - captain of the rival crew. Originally introduced to seduce Captain Crow for the so the Green Pirates could raid their ship, she's now a regular aboard Crow's ship and no longer seems to pose any threat.
- Boof - A wimpy pirate, often a target of Charlie and Seahawk.
- The cartoonist - often appears at his drawing table with a sign saying Overboard, Inc. Whenever Charlie comes into his office asking for a raise, he draws a sea monster to eat him.
- The Green Pirates - the rivals of the Overboard crew, they always around to start a fight or attempt to steal their treasure. While they tend to be smarter than the Overboard crew, they have been known to outsmart the Green Pirates, and often the Green Pirates have been shown to not be much smarter or more mature than the Overboard crew anyway.
- The Sea Monster - A giant godzilla-like creature that shows up now and then to terrorize Crow's ship. Not to be confused with the tentacle that is usually drawn in as a practical joke by the cartoonist.
