[edit] History

The company was founded by Roy Kelley in 1963, and its first property was the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel, which opened in 1967. In 1986, Outrigger became the largest hotel chain in Hawaii when its room count pushed over 7,000.

In 1999, Outrigger hotels created a new brand, Ohana Hotels to better market its more moderately priced three-star properties, while keeping the Outrigger brand for its higher-end four-star and luxury properties. There are 11 Ohana properties.

[edit] Properties

There are 10 Outrigger and Ohana properties just in the Waikiki neighbourhood alone, including the Outrigger Waikiki and the Outrigger Reef. They also run six resorts in Maui, five on the Big Island and three on Kauai.

Internationally, Outrigger has a number of properties in Australia and New Zealand, as well as resorts on the islands of Guam, Fiji, Huahine in French Polynesia and on Bali.

[edit] Recent Developments

The company's most recent initiative is Waikiki Beach Walk, a $460 million, 8-acre hotel-retail-entertainment complex, billed by the company as the largest development in the history of Waikiki, set to open in December 2006.

As of January 2007, The Outrigger Resorts of Australia and Fiji will be closed down due to their financial struggles of the past years and sold to MFS Ltd under the Stella Resorts Group brand for $92 million. The 14 resorts will be re-branded after the sale. [1]
