Out Skerries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Out Skerries are an island group in Shetland, Scotland. They are sometimes called the Outer Skerries or just Skerries (although this may lead to confusion with the Ve Skerries). The Out Skerries lie about four miles north east of Whalsay and form the easternmost part of Scotland, lying only 320 km from Norway.

The main islands, all small, are Housay, Bruray and Grunay. The population is 76. The first two of these are populated and are linked by a bridge. The islands have a primary and secondary school, two shops, a fish processing factory, an airstrip, and a church. The secondary school is the smallest in the UK; in 2004 it had only two pupils. The main industry on the islands is fishing.
