[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The crew of Starbug come across a rift between Dimensions and meet their counterparts from another reality; only this time Kochanski was in stasis and Lister is the hologram. The rift breaks and Kristine is trapped with our crew; and although Lister does not mind, Kryten goes into jealousy override determined to get her back to her own dimension. Lister finally uncovers his parents' identities.

The episode's name is derived from Ouroboros, the mythological dragon or worm swallowing its own tail.

[edit] Trivia

  • This is the second Red Dwarf episode to forfeit the opening titles for the purposes of time and episode pacing (the first being the second series episode Parallel Universe).
  • Danny John-Jules's nephew, Alexander, played the infant Dave Lister in this episode. Danny suggested his nephew to play Lister due to the fact the hue of his nephew's skin was similar to Craig Charles who played Lister, and also he noticed his nephew had "chubby hamster cheeks" like Charles.
  • The exterior shot of the blue "sub-space" passageway connecting to Starbug was the first computer generated sequence ever produced by the newly-commissioned CGI department of the BBC (which was commissioned in early 1997).
  • A model was used for the shots of GELF battle crusier that had been made out of an old vacuum cleaner.
  • The GELF battle cruiser design, colour and texture was used as the background for the Series VII DVD cover.
  • When Kochanski puts the cat into the disintegrator, the keypad outside the door is actually a slightly altered 1990's hand-held game, called Lights Out.
  • This episode marked the first appearance of the White Midget shuttlecraft which had been designed all the way back in the original series, but had not been seen until this episode.
