Our Lady's High School, Motherwell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Our Lady's High is a Roman Catholic secondary school for 11-18 year olds located in the North Lanarkshire council area. The school roll is 650 pupils.

The school is located on Dalziel Drive and the acting rector is Bernard Love.

It is a six year secondary with a high level of education and equipped with one of the best chemistry departments in North Lanarkshire. It's Music department, headed by Mrs Anna Glover, is also among the most highly regarded music departments in Scotland. The school also has a comprehensive LRC, notable for it's fun loving librarian and helpful elves that make the books. Our Lady's high school boasts a number a well equipped departments, such as computing and technical, and is proud to open its doors to drama students with the reintroduction of a drama department, headed by Neil Millar, and his horde of highly commended crash drama students who are setting in stone the legacy of Our Lady's high.

The school has a partnership with Kamwokya and regularly sends pupils and staff to the region to help SCIAF in providing aid for poor families. The 6th year pupils of Our Lady's also hold an annual Christmas party for the children of Clydeview school; a primary school for children with special needs in North Motherwell area.

Our Lady's High, as the name suggests, is a Roman catholic school where religion is included in every pupil's timetable, whether they are new first years or sixth years. Pupils have opportunities to attend retreats, giving them a greater insight into their religion. A noteworthy retreat that is worth a mention, is the Sixth Year pilgrimage to Rome which is to take place in February 2007. A group of 12 Our Lady's High School pupils, 15 St Aidan's High (A local Catholic high School in Wishaw), two Chaplains, three Maths teachers, One R.E teacher and modern languages teacher, will be flying out to Rome during the February weekend to partake in the most adventurous Sixth Year retreat yet. Hopefully the pupils will return safe and sound, having witnessed many once in a life time events (including an Audience with the Pope, and an exclusive trip to the Scavii).

The religious ethos of the school is heavily commended which attributes to the good-nature of the pupils and the school's standing in the local community. One example of which is the giving of Christmas parcels to the local community during the festive season, and also the fund raising for SCIAF which the school supports through the period of lent. It is the only school in the country which has a war memorial chapel as part of it's original design, currently the school's chaplain is Father Stephen Millar.

The four school houses consists of famous saints with ties to scotland, St Columba, St Andrew, St Margaret (Queen of scotland), and St (Margaret) Sinclair, with house colours being yellow, red, blue, and green, respectively.

The School has an exceptionally high standard in uniform. And if the School had a Government System, it would be Facism, we are very proud of this.

Last year the school band achieved a silver at the national concert band festival and enjoyed a trip to Valkenburg, Holland (2005/2006). During the current session of 2006/07 the school band has already achieved a Gold award at the national concert band festival, and on March the 30th, 2007 - the OLHS school band attained a GOLD award at the National Concert Band Festival; which was well deserved. Well done guys!

Over the last few years, Our Lady's High School has set its sites on improving the thriving Learning Support base. Action was taken a few years ago to create an up to date, comprehensive Learning Support Base, equipped with well trained staff able to cope with children with all learning needs. Many senior pupils have the opportunity to work with younger pupils on a one to one level; obtaining good results and valuable experience for potential support staff of the future. The base is continuing to grow with positive results and will keep on growing in the upcoming years.

The school operates a system in which the last 3 weeks of the summer term are devoted to settling the pupils into the timetable for the next session, (for example: the 1st years would try their 2nd year timetables for the last few weeks)

The school also plays host to the infamous Anthony Welsh (6M)who is an immense, funny, sexy guy who is also a guitar god.
