Our House (musical)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Our House" was a relatively short-lived musical production staged at the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End that ran from 28th October 2002 to 16th August 2003. [1] The show featured songs from the 1980s ska group Madness and was named after one of their most popular hit singles, "Our House".

Written by Tim Firth, the story for "Our House" told a tale of modern-day love set on the streets of London and followed two different possible courses in the life of a young man, Joe, following his involvement in petty crime. [2]

Madness played a role in the executive production of the show and Suggs himself stepped into the production for a time, playing the central character's father.

Despite winning the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical [3], it received mixed reviews from critics and closed after less than 10 months. (This was also because of dwindling audiences due to the terror attacks of 9/11)

A recorded version of the original production was broadcast on BBC3 in December 2003 [4]. The recording was released on DVD on 1st November 2004.

In July 2006, a new production of the show toured Japan, starting in Tokyo. A scaled-down national tour of the UK is scheduled for autumn 2007.
