Ouachita orogeny
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ouachita orogeny was a mountain building event that resulted in the folding and faulting of exposed strata in the Ouachita Geosyncline in the southern portion of Laurentia, in what is now Southern United States (~from Texas to Arkansas). Laurentia straddled on the equator. Rheic Ocean was to the south of Laurentia. A subduction zone formed along southern Laurentia, this causes South America to move northward which eventually collided with Laurentia that resulted to form the Ouachita Mountains. The Ouachita Mountains during Permian to the Jurassic resembled Rocky Mountains of western United States, millions of years later, layers of rock have eroded away.
