[edit] Band history

Witnessing a brief live performance impressed Sharon Osbourne enough for OTEP to land a spot on Ozzfest before signing onto a label. OTEP's lyrics often involve pain and abuse. OTEP is an experimental band best described as a fusion of death metal, rap metal and nu-metal, with goth metal influences.

OTEP consists of four members: vocalist Otep Shamaya, guitarist Karma Cheema, drummer Brian Wolff, and bassist eViL j make up the current lineup. Their second album, House of Secrets, produced by Greg Wells in Los Angeles at Rocket Carousel Studios, was released July 27, 2004. OTEP has performed at Ozzfest in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

The band hails from the west coast of the United States forming in the fall of 2000. Within eight months of forming, Sharon Osbourne was impressed enough to offer OTEP a third stage slot on Ozzfest 2001 before they had a record deal. Record label Capitol signed the band without a demo, strictly based on their live performance at Ozzfest. The result was their debut album, Sevas Tra.

When Shamaya approached the sophomore effort, House of Secrets, she decided to hire producer Greg Wells, who recently worked with The Deftones. "For this record, I wanted to conspire with a really creative producer who not only could write music but was willing to test the limits of it. Before writing 'House', I met Greg and within five minutes I knew I wanted to work with him; his genius at writing, composing, and passion for music excited me. He understood my philosophy of art and it's been the best creative experience I've ever had. House of Secrets is a much more pure album," she said.

As of November 2006, OTEP is on a North American tour promoting their new album, titled "The_Ascension." The release date is currently set as March 20, 2007. Otep has released a song on the band's MySpace site, titled "A Taste," which is composed of 5 second clips of many of the new songs off the upcoming album.

There is also an newly released mp3 of full-length "GhostFlowers" on the internet.

Capitol signed the band in 2000 based solely on their performance during the 2000 edition of Ozzfest.

[edit] Trivia

  • Otep Shamaya swears in an interview1 that Otep is the name on her birth certificate. In addition, the name Otep is Egyptian in origin, meaning "creative offerings" or "that which brings peace into chaos". The name was given her by her mother, who was a big fan of archaeology.

[edit] "OTEP goes 2.0"

In 2006, OTEP's publicists circulated the claim that the band "has one of the most progressive and innovative relationships with the today’s ever-expanding internet." An official statement read "The outburst of social networks and the appearance of web 2.0 based technologies have completely revolutionized the ways bands can communicate with their fans, and OTEP is at the forefront of this Cultural Revolution. For example, OTEP recently teamed up with Eventful and successfully created the first User Generated Tour. Other new web 2.0 based technologies that OTEP are utilizing include Snapvine, a voice-player widget and Umundo, a video-player widget. Examples of these widgets can be found on their MySpace page. They have also formed a collaboration with newly established internet management and marketing company BuddyLube as of September 2006."
