Ossi Väänänen (born August 8, 1980, Vantaa, Finland) is a Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft as their second-round pick, #43 in total.

[edit] Playing career

According to the Jokerit official website, Väänänen became a Jokerit player at the age of five. He played in the Jokerit SM-liiga team from 1998 to 2000 and during the NHL lockout, winning the SM-liiga silver medal in 2000 and again in 2005 during the lockout. He played three complete seasons for the Coyotes, from 2000 to 2003, and 67 games in the 2003-04 season before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche.

Väänänen has represented Finland in several IIHF World Championships, as well as the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, where he scored one goal and two assists. He has been named to Team Finland for the 2006 Winter Olympics.
