If it's illegal in Turkey to use the letter "W" (or any other letter not in the Turkish alphabet), then I guess Wikipedia is illegal over there? *Dan T.* 04:12, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Ha ha it would be very funny if the underlying mentality wasn't orientalism, a bit condecending at that.. :) Civil servants and public officials have to use the official language and its accompanying alphabet in their correspondance and work - that's all that means, just like in France for example. The case was not simply because of the "W", but for the use of another language other than the official one. Orientalism anyone? Why don't you check Show TV for example mr. smarty pants? :)) It was one of the first private TV channels in Turkey has always used the "ShoW" spelling in its logo - I never heard of it being taken to court in anyway... In fact, no.. I remember seeing that there are people in Turkey whose sole job is to take out the "W" keys from keyboards, go through foreign languages books sold in bookstores with black markers crossing out the Ws, handing out leaflets to tourists not to use words that include W while talking even between themselves as long as they are in Turkey, and the Turkish government operates a top-secret and sophisticated firewall that blocks the appearance of Ws on the computer screens of Turks surfing foreign web-sites.. And English language courses in Turkey are also done without any Ws. So the teacher would write "Hov are you?" or "Vere vere you?" on the board for example, that sort of thing..
