Founded in 1917 by the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, Osmania University is the seventh oldest institution of higher learning in India, the third oldest in southern India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely State of Hyderabad. Throughout its existence of almost nine decades, it has shown remarkable progress and sustained an integrated development of all faculties. With a sprawling campus of nearly 1600 acres (6 km²) and buildings of majestic beauty and architectural splendor, Osmania University is perhaps the symbol of the largest higher education system in the country. With its strong reputation, the University has always attracted students from all across the nation as well as from various other countries. It is the home to nearly 300,000 students pursuing their higher studies in its campus, constituent affiliated colleges and district centres. Its faculty and staff number nearly 5,000.

[edit] Business
The Department of Business Management, Osmania University has been offering an MBA program since 1964. This program has been consistently ranked as one of the best MBA programs in India. Only 60 students from over 100,000 applicants make it into this MBA program through a competitive exam.
[edit] Geography
The Department of Geography is the oldest and largest geography department in south India. Established in 1942, it has a substantial infrastructure with high-tech labs for geography and geoinformatics, which include the Image Processing lab, the Photogrammetry lab, and the Geoinformatics lab. Its infrastructure is perhaps the best of any geography department in India. It has a hundred computer systems spread over five labs, ARC INFO software—multiple single user and multiple user licences, ERDAS Imagine, and LIECA photogrammetry suite—again multiple user licences, GIS software, an automated office, and networked labs.
The Department of Geography has some of India's best-known geographers on its faculty. It offers Masters and Doctorate degrees in both geography and geoinformatics. Prof. Manzoor Alam, the department head, gave the initial boost to this department by getting substantial funding from the University Grants Commission for various facets of development of this department. Prof. Kalpana Markandey gave the department a second boost, after helping to bring a grant of one crore rupees (over US $220,000 in October 2006) from the Department of Science and Technology and the University Grants Commission for the development of labs and new courses - especially M.Sc Geoinformatics. She had envisioned the M.Sc Geoinformatics course as Head of the Department and made it effective in the Geography Department as Chairperson, Board of Studies.

The College of Engineering (OUCE), established in 1929, offers B.E (Bachelor of Engineering), M.E (Master of Engineering), and Ph.D. programs in various engineering fields.
