The Pacific Ocean was an American indie rock band formed in 1997 and based in New York City. It combined musical influences ranging from Nick Drake to Sonic Youth. Although the band rarely toured and never developed much of a popular profile its recordings were well regarded by critics.
Edward Baluyut had left Versus in 1996 due to work and family commitments and had played drums for Connie Lovatt's band Containe in 1996 as well. Connie and Edward formed The Pacific Ocean in 1997. The Pacific Ocean released its first mini-album Birds don't think they're flying that same year with Edward playing both drums and guitar on the album and Patrick Ramos (his replacement in Versus) playing drums on one track.
In 1999 the band released Less Than the Needle, More Than the Shotgun, co-produced by Edward's brother James Baluyut, which contrasted Edward's noise rock derived guitar playing and Connie's soft vocals. Steve Pilgrim, who had contributed drums to Less Than the Needle, More Than the Shotgun, joined the group before the recording of So Beautiful and Cheap and Warm. This album which was produced by Bill Callahan (aka Smog) under the alias of Johnny Appleseed, and featured additional guitar playing by Alan Licht. So Beautiful and Cheap and Warm was a quieter album than its predecessor and featured Connie Lovatt's contributions much more prominently.
The Pacific Ocean has not played live or recorded since 2003. Connie Lovatt played bass for Smog on the album A River Ain't Too Much to Love (2005) and subsequently toured with Smog.
