[edit] Welcome to the Wikipedia!

Hello, and Welcome to the Wikipedia, Osbus! Thanks for weighing in over on the Recently created admins discussion. Hope you enjoy editing here and becoming a Wikipedian! Here are a few perfunctory tips to hasten your acculturation into the Wikipedia experience:

And some odds and ends: Boilerplate text, Brilliant prose, Cite your sources, Civility, Conflict resolution, How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Pages needing attention, Peer review, Policy Library, Utilities, Verifiability, Village pump, Wikiquette, and you can sign your name on any page by typing 4 tildes: ~~~~.

Best of luck, Osbus, and most importantly, have fun! Ombudsman 21:22, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Don't do that

Pleeease, don't do this again. That's considered vandalism. You can get blocked for that. --Dijxtra 16:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Warning

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. --Dijxtra

[edit] Question

If you want me to stop vandalizing, then tell me what I'm doing wrong first. I looked up the vandalism page thing and it said if I don't know that I'm vandalizing, then I'm not. Besides, I just asked you a simple question on your talk page, how the hell is that vandalizing. And please, answer this b/c I would like to stay an active member on Wikipedia and continue contributing. Chill, not only am I relatively new here but I'm probably a lot younger than youOsbus 14:52, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

This are the problems: [1], [2], [3]. Here you can see that after you edit a part of the page, the whole page gets messed up. I thought you do that on purpose because you are some kind of sick person. But, now I realised that you maybe are not doing that on purpose. Now, let's see what could be the problem. Do you have any idea why parts of pages get removed when you edit them? --Dijxtra 15:18, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Whoa, that's really strange...I wish I knew what was wrong. But I noticed when I edit my own talk page nothing gets deleted Osbus 15:21, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Do you have any kind of content filter? --Dijxtra 15:28, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
No. When I edited some pages before the lacrosse nomination, nothing got deletedOsbus 15:32, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Hm. Don't know. You could try asking at Village pump... --Dijxtra 16:15, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
If I do,I'll just screw up the page again Osbus 18:37, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, if you explain that you don't know why this is happening, I'm sure they'll understand... --Dijxtra 01:37, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] All right

So,I have decided to continue editing, but if I do vandalize by accident and screw up the page, please understand it is an accident. I have looked at the preview to make sure nothing I did not want to change was changed. Thank you.Osbus 23:32, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hey, you

I was using my minor skills in Latin to accompany your story. I was actually surfing userpages through userboxes and I found yours. I'm kind of bored often/procrastinating. Shawn 01:26, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rock 'n Roll Portal

You're working on it right. I'm willing to help out, only I'm not exactly sure what to do, seeing as I'm relatively new here. I'll figure it out, but if there's anything in specific you want done, let me know.Qeee1 22:39, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem. If it's not too late, though, you may want to move it to Portal:Rock and Roll for consistency (we use the "and" over "n' " and "&" whenever possible, outside of official names). Be sure to move the subpages and check for double redirects.--HereToHelp (talkcontribs) 23:47, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Hey, my email is qeee1@lycos.com, send me the doc then and I'll see what I can do.Qeee1 16:49, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I've made a new version of the portal, let me know what you think. The reasons for not following your design exactly:
  1. Firstly the box at the top. Wikipedia in trying to be an encyclopedia, tries to standardise things such as portals, and as far as I can see all the other portals use the typical Introduction box. If you want to change that I think you'd have to change the convention itself as it would look bad for just one portal to have it the other way.
  2. Featured band/artist is too restrictive, it disallows many of the other great articles people might write. A featured article option is much more inclusive and undoubtably most of the articles will be ban/artist articles anyway.
  3. Featured picture... well this is just my own personal preference but I think it really enhances the portals it's used on.
  4. A categories section works better than an articles section if you expect the portal to grow a lot, which I'm hoping it will.
  5. The did you know section is again just personal preference.
  6. Accepting all those points, the layout there is the most workable, with big boxes to the left and smaller ones to the right.

Hope I haven't annoyed you too much. Well let me know and we'll try work something out.Qeee1 22:53, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

  1. Add Rock and Roll Birthdays, everyone likes that stuff... I look some information on it if you want me to.--IAMTHEEGGMAN (talk) 18:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your design

Okay, so I was working on it and this was the best I could come up with:

Portal:ROCK

AND

ROLL

"Wikipedia has it's own rock and roll portal?"

"Yes it does."

Rock and roll (also spelled rock 'n' roll, especially in its first decade), is a genre of music that emerged as a defined musical style in the Southern United States in the 1950s, and quickly spread to the rest of the country, and the world (rhythm sample). It later evolved into the various sub-genres of what is now called simply 'rock'. As a result, "rock and roll" now has two distinct meanings: either traditional rock and roll in the 1950s style, or later rock and even pop music which may be very far from traditional rock and roll (rhythm sample). From the late 1950s to the late 1990s rock was perhaps the most popular form of music in the western world.

I dunno though, it doesn't look the best. Just to briefly explain it: The first line sets the parameters for the table.

The second line sets the parameters for the first "cell" (the column that's blue).

To change that colour by the way, go to where it says style="background:blue; and change "blue" to something else, you can replace it with a hex code. For a wider variety of colours and more info go to Web colors. Oh and the bit just after that is setting the default font color for that cell to white.

The next big chunk is what is actually in the first column. You might want to change where it has "font color".

After that you got the parameters for the second column, what's in the second column and closing the table.

The whole thing will have to go to where the first chunk of writing on the portal is. Well after all the "div" stuff, there should be a chunk corresponding to the intro.

Also then you'll need to change Portal:Rock_and_Roll/box-header and change where it says "background color", or background or something. There should be a hex code there relating to the orange that's currently in place.

I'd advise getting "here to help"'s advice first though, as I've messed up some stuff by accident already and he seems to know what he's doing.Qeee1 13:08, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] R and R Birthdays

It would be everyweek, I already have ones for this week up Portal:Rock and Roll/Birthdays. If you want to add it... --IAMTHEEGGMAN (talk) 21:26, 19 March 2006 (UTC) P.S. Here's the link

[edit] A lot of My Rock Portal Ideas

Here is a list of em... and it's a lot

  1. Band of the Week
  2. A directory to Category:Guitarists, Bassists etc.
  3. Instrument/Musician of the Week
  4. Rock and Roll Quotes ("These go to eleven"
  5. Also I have a lot of featured pic ideas
  6. More to Come...

--IAMTHEEGGMAN (talk) 21:40, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Re:Ideas

If you look at the French one that have a directory for the bassists, guitarists etc.

And for pics, I was thinking Album Covers (Pink Floyd, Zeppelin).--IAMTHEEGGMAN (talk) 00:00, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] If you're going to do a bunch of Portals...

...you should probably read Wikipedia:Portal, including the section on how to create them. When you put stuff on the CBB, make it short and sweet. Bold the main item. Just a few ideas.--HereToHelp 00:45, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Also, add anything that isn't finished to Category:Portals needing attention using the following code:
[[Category:Portals needing attention|{{PAGENAME}}]]
Hope that helps.--HereToHelp 00:48, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Fashion

Of course I'm glad to help work on Portal:Fashion! By the way, do you want me to do anything in specific? --TBC??? ??? ??? 20:06, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] rock portal

Hello,
First, sorry for my english, I'll try being understandable :). I have sent few words in the french wiki and I have asked people for helping you and for sending you a message here. I wish someone could help :). K!roman 21:01, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I'm an other french wikipedian. For the portal, the template which structures everything is [4]. It gives the look and the color of the others templates. The sections we have are:

  • Nice quotes of jimi hendrix and Elvis presley and the guitar pic.

On the left:

  • "what is rock and roll" > a quick introduction
  • Article of the month where we ask for help to write around a topic
  • Categories around rock
  • Musicians and bands classified by instrument and alphebetical order
  • Rock and roll genres and subgenres

Right:

  • light on > (i dont know how translate that) It's a selected article
  • News on rock/current events (albums released...)
  • Do you know > anecdotes
  • New articles

On the bottom, a link to the rock project. Hoping it will be usefull. Boeb'is 20:03, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Simon Byrne FAC

Than you for your support. Regarding your comments: I have have been looking for ages for more information on his earlier life, especially before he left Ireland, but I can't find any more. I suspect records etc. in Ireland at that period where even more haphazzard than in England. Records in the UK started only in 1837, so unless someone was particularly high born, (which as a rule bare-knuckle fighters were not) little is available. Hopefully some day something might turn up, but so far this article seems to be the most detailed assembly of facts about him in books or on the internet. Thanks again. Giano | talk 12:43, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem...great article. Osbus 17:13, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images

Yes, you can upload images of bands. But not just any old image you pull off the internet. Generally they need to be pictures you've taken yourself. Sometimes promo pictures from a presskit are acceptable, but only for articles about the band. Album cover images are as well, but only for the album. Wikipedia:Copyright tries to explain it. [edit] Alternative music Wikiproject

Hey, thanks for signing up for my proposed alt-rock Wikiproject. I think I might officially start it within the next week. I was wondering what particular areas of alternative music do you think you can most contribute to, as well as if you have the ability to contribute sound, images, sources, and so forth to articles. Thanks. WesleyDodds 08:12, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to edit my proposal page; I plan to start the project officially soon and I would like feedback on it. WesleyDodds 02:25, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Editcounter

Hi, what exactly isn't working about it? I'm not very familiar with it (I was only helping for a few days), but it's possible you don't have all the requirments (The JRE). Let me know exactly what errors it's giving you, and I'll try to help. Better yet, ask Titoxd, he is very active in the development. Cheers --lightdarkness (talk) 00:28, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiproject started

Ok, I started the project, which is located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative music. Can you make the portal and template? WesleyDodds 22:52, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I mean the shortcut at the top of the page. Also, the Project template should link to alternative rock, since "alternative music" is a redirect to that page anyway.
I'll get back to you on other ideas as I can. Unfortunately I received some injuries last night so I mgiht be slow in responding or editing in the next few days. WesleyDodds 00:24, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

A Wikiproject template has been made by another participant. After you make the shortcuts (and possibly a userbox) I'll start pasting it on articles.

A thought: Do we restrict posting the Alternative music project template to genres, or should we put it on relevant band and artist articles as well? WesleyDodds 22:28, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Go ahead. Persomally I like the project template the way it is, but I can see where the phrasing can be more succinct. WesleyDodds 00:29, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Advocate Team Re: RfC Woggly

I am presently coordinating a team of advocates re: my RfC for harassment / threats by user:woggly. I welcome you to be a member. Simply read the RFC lodged against me by user:woggly and the RFC which I have filed against her. It's really simple stuff when all of her harassment and my (and others) various attempts to resolve any issues are in black and white. Please also view the talks pages where Woggly admits to harassment and infers that she will not cease. Thank you for your consideration. Best wishes, IsraelBeach 15:47, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Osbus, thanks for your kind, generous offer to assist. I am the subject of a RfC by user:Woggly and have in turn filed a RfC against her. The latest feedback I received was from user:El_C who appears to be moderating my RfC against Woggly. This is what he has to say:

"Hi again. I'm afraid that falls short of what is needed, since the tone behind the comments does not appear conducive to resolving the dispute (it appears near- patronising and condescending, at times). Additionally, no diffs are provided, so the respective contexts cannot be guaged. The items should involve a brief-sentence summary followed by a diff, rather than quoting whole responses unsourced. Also, I find it noteworthy that the final addition highlights my original point: on letting someone withdraw from a dispute if they so wish (that is, why continue to pursue the conflict if she will no longer a factor?). El_C 07:48, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

I believe that EL_C is an objective and professional administrator but needs certain criteria completed. As this is my first RfC and being the one who has filed, I am subjective and need objective, creative organization for my defense in the RfC that Woggly filed against me and a creative, aggresive offense in the RfC which I filed against Woggly.

Bottom-line: for political and or religious purposes Woggly and a few others are coming at me. I created a successful community chat room in Israel on Yahoo groups "NewRaanana" (subject of a cover story in the Jerusalem Post which they are threatened by and I believe this is what motivates their hate, personal attacks and present actions. Can you redesign my RfC against Woggly and add to my response to her RfC. I have nothing to hide here, no need to go to private e-mail. Let's keep this open for all to learn from. Many thanks, best wishes, IsraelBeach 21:16, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
