Osborne Park, Western Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Osborne Park is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Stirling.
Osborne Park was named after William Osborne, a butcher who owned an abattoir and land along Wanneroo Road and who was elected to the City of Stirling’s predecessor, the Perth Road Board, in 1875. [1]
The suburb is divided by the Mitchell Freeway. The area west of the freeway is industrial and commercial - many warehouses and small businesses are located in Osborne Park, as well as some larger retailers including Ikea, Harvey Norman and Officeworks. East of the freeway, the suburb is primarily residential.
Its post code is 6017.
The area has an interesting history. It was first settled by Chinese market gardners before a wave of Italian immigrant families followed in the same enterprise, including Gino Pozzi, who started a market garden on virgin bushland in the 1920s with his brother Antonio.
After the second world war, many of the market gardens were sold and subdivided for housing as the locality became part of the Perth metropolitan area.
Some of the market gardeners, including Gino Pozzi, retained their large properties, but the last of these have been subdivided for housing estates, including Princeton and Rosalea Estates.
