[edit] The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Os (Norse Óss), since the first church was built here (in 1703). The name is identical with the word óss m 'mouth of a river' (here Vangrøfta, running out in Glomma).

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1993). It shows three cowbells.
