The Oriental Orthodoxy Portal

Oriental Orthodoxy is the communion of Eastern Christian Churches that recognize only the first three ecumenical councils — the First Council of Nicaea, the First Council of Constantinople and the Council of Ephesus — and reject the dogmatic definitions of the Council of Chalcedon. Hence, these Churches are also called Old Oriental Churches. Despite potentially confusing nomenclature, Oriental Orthodox churches are distinct from the churches that collectively refer to themselves as Eastern Orthodoxy.

H.H. Patriarch Zakka I Iwas

H.H Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas (Arabic: زكى عيواص‎, Zakkà ‘Īwāṣ) is the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and head of the Syriac Orthodox Church. The patriarchate is based in Damascus. As is traditional for the head of the church, he has adopted the name Ignatius. Being the first patriarch to be named Zakka, his name is often written as Ignatius Zakka I Iwas.

Following the death of Patriarch Ignatius Jacob III in 1980, Zakka Iwas was elected by the synod of the church to be the 122nd Syriac Patriarch of Antioch. He was enthroned as patriarch on 14 September, the feast of the Cross, by Basileus Paulose II, Catholicos of the East, in the patriarchal cathedral in Damascus. As Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I, he has been involved in ecumenical dialogue, and is a president of the World Council of Churches. He has also established a new monastic seminary, Dayro d-Mor Afrem, at Saidnaya, near Damascus. On 14 September 2005, celebrations were held for his Silver Jubilee.

Quotes

And how does the light creep into the eye? No one has grasped it: just as our Saviour who dwelt in the womb.

This is true perfection: not to avoid a wicked life because we fear punishment, like slaves; not to do good because we expect repayment, as if cashing in on the virtuous life by enforcing some business deal. On the contrary, disregarding all those good things which we do hope for and which God has promised us, we regard falling from God’s friendship as the only thing dreadful, and we consider becoming God’s friend the only thing truly worthwhile.

Prayer is the inspiration of childhood, the refuge of youth and peace during old age.

- St. Gregorios Geevarghese of Malankara
