The Oriental Bluebird was originally the Japanese flagged Hiyo Maru. In 1992, it was renamed and re-flagged to Panama.[10]

The Oriental Bluebird serves as the fuel tanker for Japan's whaling fleet[11], and also transports whale meat.[12]
