This article is within the scope of the Organizations WikiProject, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of organizations. We are developing a framework that will sort every category by location, field, ideology, and type. We need a few more people to help coordinate this ambitious project. New categorization scheme being developed at the Organizations WikiProject above. The concept we are developing to clean-up the coverage of this topic involves moving existing categories and articles into location, field, ideology, and kind.   • Very good idea. I've started on this, by listing above my proposed layout of the current 84 subcategories. I was unable to catagorize quite a few of them, suggestions appreciated. I've also linked all the categories. JesseW, the juggling janitor 03:07, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

A few other issues:

• Heritage, Ethnicity, Cultural history, Identity organizations ? Thoughts as to the best terminology to pick up things like the InterCeltic stuff and the Turanian Society and LGBT orgs, Latino orgs, and so on? I'm thinking tentatively "Organizations by ethnic and cultural identity"?
• What about a supercat structure of:

  Organizations by subject

  Organizations by geographic region (picks up city, nationality, international)

  ... maybe others?

• "Clubs and societies" seems a little non-obvious as the home for "hobbyist organizations" -- what about "hobbyist and recreational organizations"?
• There's a problem with "political organizations" and "civic and political organizations" -- thoughts?

[edit] Non profits NGOs etc

Orgs as currently organized are not organized (tongue twister!), that is clear, but this list seems to lose some of the positive complexity that has developed without ridding the negative complexity.

Take human rights organizations for example, they currently are listed in

• Category:Charities and various subcategories such as Category:International charities and Category:Humanitarian aid and Category:Development charities
• Category:Non-governmental organizations and various subcats such as Category:International non-governmental organizations
• Category:Non-profit organizations which is mostly just broken out by country of origin
• Category:Human rights bodies, which is confusingly a subset of Category:Civic and political organizations
• Category:Civil rights and Category:Peace organizations
• Category:Advocacy groups

and I'm sure myriad others.

I think non profit, non governmental organizations and charities should be collapsed into one category, with a clear reference to the various regional usages (e.g. non profit is generally U.S. term, NGO everywhere else). Divisions by issue should be standarized. e.g. see Category:Activism by issue and Category:Advocacy groups for the various approaches currently being taken. In dividing by geogrpahy, seems that cats like Category:International non-governmental organizations should be eliminated in favor of regional or country cats. Eek my head hurts.
