Talk:Orford Castle

[edit] Opening times

The article gives the impression that you can only view the castle by taking a tour, but in fact unless things have changed recently you can just turn up during opening times and wander around yourself. Nobody lives there.

Tourists may like to note that Framlingham Castle is not very far in driving time away (you would need a good map to navigate between them). This has the outer bailey but no keep, the reverse of Orford Castle. Orford is a quite attractive village and has a sea-food resturant and river, but no access to the sea because of Orford Ness. However you can take a ferry across the river to Orford Ness, until recently a top-secret military site, and see the shingly beach there. As far as I recall it is not suitable for swimming because of the currants (currents?). Entry to the castles and use of the ferry depends upon finding out their opening times and paying for a ticket. Opening times for Orford Castle are given on the external link.

A few years ago a famous american film star stayed on holiday incognito at the pub near the castle - cannot remember his name.

In the basement of the castle is some kind of mysterious tunnel or alcove which is far too dark to see the end of, and nobody likes walking along it in pitch darkness, so I suggest taking a torch in with you. Please report back here what you find.
