The introduction of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky was planned by Russian Emperor Peter I of Russia and was established in Russia by Catherine I of Russia on May 21, 1725 in memory of the deeds of Alexander Nevsky.

Among the most prominent recipients of the Order are the following people: Admiral Naum Sinyavin, Generalissimo Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov, mayor-general Alexander Suvorov, general Nikolay Adlerberg, general Mikhail Kutuzov, Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, and many more.
