Ok I have taken a first rewrite of it. It is longer than I wanted. Some of that material we can chuck I suspect. Or move it to the creationism vs. evolution controversy article. Coding Problem

Wow that is mysterious. I guess I would ask for help at the village pump on the community page. I do not know what is going wrong. I have no problems editing, although occassionally my edits conflict with each other. Colors

The problem with blue text on a white background is that it might get confused with wikilinks. Any other preferences or suggestions? Perhaps a slightly darker blue background but not as dark as the darkest blue I show? How about a pale purplish background?--Filll 19:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi, I notice that you reverted a silly piece of vandalism to Creationism. Thanks for the effort, if you'd like to do more to rid of such nuisances, Wikipedia:Vandalism gives very good advice: the warnings are steps towards a block. I've found it can be more trouble than help to be too quick in escalating warnings too quickly, so the simple "subst:test" warning is the best start unless the case is vary clear. However, you'll note I've given a blatant vandal warning to the editor in the creationism case [1]. If the problem editor persists, this can be brought up at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. .. dave souza, talk 10:27, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

I wish some of these things were easy to implement. I did a sockpuppet thing against one of our favorite nuisances on the Evolution page, and I had to do so many things to get it done, I about ran out of patience. I figured an administrator needed to deal with this guy. He has been warned numerous times about vandalizing, so he needs a slap. I don't know if you looked at his vandalism, but that took a whole bunch of work to do. I was actually impressed, although I'm not sure I would qualify it as a work of art. Grappa-soaked chestnuts

Are apparently only available if one has Italian in-laws that bring them back from the old country. We have been looking for them at Vancouver, BC specialty shops with no luck. There is more involved in making them than soaking the chestnuts in grappa--the chestnuts appear to be candied, and the grappa is sweetened enough to make it almost a light syrup. Somehow the chestnuts get completely impregnated with the grappa--maybe from canning under pressure.--EveRickert 17:27, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

St.-Pierre and Miquelon

They were under the control of Vichy France. Which of course was part of the Axis. The Germans even had a few military people and an officer stationed on the island. I read this someplace and I want to find the source to get it into the article. I am not sure best how to characterize the situation. As I read more it is quite complicated with different parts of the US government trying to do different things, and controversy between the US, Canada and the UK about what to do about the islands, etc. And US attitudes changed after Dec 7, 1941 too I think. So it is far more complicated than it first appears. That is why that part of the narrative is sort of bare; it was so complicated when I looked into it that I did not know what to write.--Filll 23:22, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Ok good. If you can make it more clear about what happened during WWII, that would help. I set it aside some weeks ago for a while when I had it to a somewhat reasonable state. That is why I try to do some random fun articles like bees and toxic chemicals (which is a DYK article right now if you look at the front page!). The evolution stuff is important, but a steady diet of fighting with kooks just gets old. And then I had the situation you saw where I basically was threatened. So I beat a hasty retreat. I won't give up on Evolution and related articles. These people will not stop until they get their way. Don't forget the stories from the Nazi Germany. Prior to Kristalnacht, every Jew in Germany thought, "it won't happen here." Little did they know what "it" would be and that "it" would happen. Threats to Civil Liberties come just a few quotes at a time--If we let the Creationists destroy the Evolution article or write that Creationism IS science, then maybe some school board member in Iowa reads this article, thinks that Creationism really is science, and all of a sudden Religion becomes a subject in public schools. In a few years, everyone has to believe what "they" believe, and you and I will say to each other, "but it can't happen here." Maybe some people on here think I'm nuts just holding the line here and there, but lucky for me I'm not really alone, many people stand in the way of Creationists stealing Civil Liberties by attempting to throw their religion into our schools. I do not care if they want religion in the schools. However, it is WHAT they want to teach and how they want to teach it that bothers me. I would have no problem with comparative religion studies or discussions of the controversy, JUST NOT IN SCIENCE CLASSES. They can teach creationism anywhere else as far as I am concerned (ok not in math either). But it is fine in debate classes and philosophy and psychology and public speaking and social studies and current events and history and language arts and literature and logic and law and civics etc. It just is not science.--Filll 01:02, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm more strict. Keep religion out of schools. I don't want my children polluted with Christian, Druid, or Voodoo myths. I'll let my Rabbi teach them about religion in a Synagogue, far away from other influence. I'm tolerant of religion being mentioned in a strict historical sense. You know, Romans killed a bunch of Christians, Christians killed a bunch of Jews, Muslim killed a bunch of Christians, Christian killed a bunch of Muslims and Jews, Christians proceeded to kill a lot of other Christians in the name of Christianity, followed by more Christians and Muslims killing Jews, followed by wherever we are today. Here is the trivia question you can help answer. What is the name and rank of the German officer who was on the islands and captured when the islands were seized by the Free French? I think he might have had one or two German privates under him as well. Bee inebriation

If you look through my articles and edits, you will notice that I do not always tackle serious subjects, although "bee inebriation" is very serious to some people. I do not just engage in battles with assorted nuts, but I do like to learn things and I like trivia. And I like things like:

  • food trivia
    • did you know we have orange cheese and yellow Phillipino rice from anetto, which is also a major colorant in lipstick and was first used as a warpaint in the Yucutan peninsula? It comes from a tree there
    • carrots apparently were purple with orange middles and the orange was bred as a tribute to the Dutch Royal House of Orange (still tracking that one down)
    • Eggplants were originally white? (hence the name)
    • The Durian is a very smelly fruit from southeast Asia that can be very expensive (about 50 bucks when ripe and fresh). It is illegal to eat it on the subway or in a hotel in some places, because it smells so bad.
    • The bubble drinks in Vietnam and tapioca pudding are made with casaba root, originally from South America, and now mainly eaten as a staple in Africa?
    • Sugar cane origins in Hawaii are a bit of a mystery
    • lutefisk, a Christmas special food in Norway, is made from rotting herring that has been doused in lye to stop the rotting?
    • surstromming, a food eaten in the summer in Sweden, is made from rotting fish that is preserved in salt water and smells so bad you can smell it for a great distance

Other interesting facts:

  • There were three parts of North America actually occupied by the Axis Powers during World War II: Aleutian islands (obviously), Miquelon and Saint-Pierre (part of Vichy France, and still part of France; within territorial boundary waters of Canada), and some locations in the Canadian Arctic occupied by Germans with weather stations to help with naval and aerial combat by making better weather forecasts for the war (completely undetected during the war itself).
  • There are two parts of the lower 48 states that you have to drive through Canada to reach by land (Point Roberts WA and Angle Inlet MN, the latter caused by a misunderstanding of the source of the Mississippi during treaty negotiations)
  • The subway system in New York City has 500 miles of abandoned track and tunnels. It has over 1000 miles of track in use. This of course does not count the above ground rail system that also existed and was removed (something like Chicago's I guess).
  • If you look at a map of the Pacific, you will see that the islands of Hawaii are all lined up in a row. If you include sea mounts and underwater knolls etc, the Hawaiian islands extend a great distance westward and then there is a sharp bend Northward as the island chain continues as the Emperor chain (the whole chain is called the Hawaii-Emperor chain, for obvious reasons). If you date all of these islands (about 50 I think) the dates get progressively older as you move along the chain, westward and then northward. The interesting thing to me is, what happened to cause the sharp bend?
  • Mummies were so plentiful in Egypt that the bodies were used as fuel for early steam locomotives, rather than burn scarce wood or coal.
  • "Mummy extract" was also put in patent medicines and sold to Victorians who wanted to stay young.

So I like to know a few unusual facts.

So in the case of bee inebriation:

  • bees are badly affected by pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals that man has introduced into the environment. They can appear drunk and dizzy, and even die. This is serious because it has a substantial economic impact of course.
  • bees also have brains and nervous systems that are similar in some ways to humans, and so their behavior when drunk is of interest to scientists in several research teams world wide, who get the bees drunk on purpose to see their behavior
  • some plants rely on getting the bees drunk so they fall inside the plant. When they are inside the plant, the plant glues some pollen sacks to the back of the bee, and then the plant partially closes to trap the bees until the glue dries sufficiently that the pollen sacks will not fall off, and then let the bees go to spread the pollen
  • Some bees like to drink more than others, and become notorious drunks around the hives. So the bees station "bee bouncers" outside the hives to keep the drunk bees from entering the hive and disrupting everything, and force them to stay outside until they sober up. If a bee is a repeat offender and gets drunk too often, the "bee bouncers" will chew the drunk bees legs off as a punishment.

And so on. So as you can see, bee inebriation is an interesting subject. Did you know that most of the bees we have here in the US are not native varieties, but were introduced from Europe to displace the native bees? The indians even referred to them as "white man's flies", according to some writing of Thomas Jefferson. So even bees can be interesting. And this is just a small slice of bee behavior, not counting on their navigational abilities, the behavior when exposed to smoke, the solitary bees, the stingless bees, bees that can sting multiple times, interactions with wasps, battles between bees, etc.--Filll 20:43, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Borat's English

Here is an example of where raspor suddenly was able to use the english language:

That is typical. ID does not like other forms of creationism and vice-versa. OEC and YEC disagree with each other, vehemently. Day-age and progressive creationism disagree. The way I view it is, there basically is a bit of money and power up for grabs. And as these organizations fight for money and power, they do not want their competition to get it.--Filll 18:48, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
I know we all found Raspor to be uncivil, rude and basically unacceptable to the community, but I hope that FM and other administrators did their due diligence before banning Everwill. I'm guessing they have access to IP addresses for every user, so they found out what he was all about. The style was similar. And the complaints were similar. As much as he might want it, we cannot have the first 10 pages of an article on intelligent design be just pure press releases from the Discovery institute, followed by 1 page of rebuttal. HHOF members on teams

Actually, my reasons for these reversals of User: Payne2tharax's edits are clear. There's no guideline & no consensus on Wikipedia: WikiProject Ice Hockey to include ALL HHOFers on ALL 30 teams. There's is however a guideline on Wikipedia: WikiProject Ice Hockey/Team pages format to exclude 'brief' tenured HHOF players on NHL teams. My actions weren't of a crusader, but merely pointing out 'Rayne2tharax's edits were without consensus. My actions have 'consensus' & 'guidelines' backing. GoodDay 20:07, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

I've added a warning to the anonymous user's talk page about adding unsourced negative information to biographies of living people. Be careful of confusion by some editors

The goal of some editors is to essentially delete the article or you can help prevent this from happening. This is very clear what is happening. Which do you prefer. A certain editor wants to pretend he does not understand what I am saying. I wonder why.* I recommend to take a close look at the history. I try to only get into battles with Creationists who try to foist their unverified opinion into scientific articles. I have to admit that I read your comments in the talk page, and it did not make much sense. I want the list to remain for references, but I honestly am not that passionate about it. Just a side note: Velvet Elvis (sp?) claims to have been registered since August. If you look at the history on his discussion page; his introductory message from Wikipedia is dated Dec.7. Of course, he deleted that information. His contributions to the discussion have distracted from the process of improving the article. Current status

I notice our creation terrorist is wreaking havoc on the evolution page.

I see we have quite a few on the Noah's Ark page as well from the edits.

  • The Evolution support article (I didn't want to post a link to reduce troll attacks) is very well done. I still like my idea of a map that shows everywhere that has scientific societies that support Evolution, but it probably is overkill and could be considered POV, although I doubt it. I wouldn't mind doing it, but I wouldn't even know how to edit such a graphic. By the way, I love graphics.
We can put in a request for a map. I have a lot more information to plot now if you look at the article.
  • We probably should do a NPOV article on Creationist Scientist support as a counter that includes a description of who the Creationist Scientists really are.
There already is a creation science article, but more articles along that line might be helpful.

The Talk:Evolution/falsifiabilitydraft is well done. It sounds like Eve will be out for a while, so why don't you set it up as an article, so we can begin editing it publicly.

I want to have more citations/references for that one if we can. It is still available for editing now.

I'm wondering what happened to the Talk:Evolution/evolutionreligiondraft. Was it incorporated somewhere? I see bits and pieces of it in a few articles here and there.

kdbuffalo was a very aggressive creationist. He was actually far smarter than most of what I have seen in the last few weeks. He would produce very good references. But he was combative and just caused too much turmoil. I did suggest that he not be banned, but he was banned anyway. Then he violated the ban over and over and over and they kept extending the ban. What happens is if you are too obnoxious, people lose patience after a while. We have had one or two creationists who were able to work constructively with everyone, and people do not mind that. We can all work together, creationist and scientist together to write an encyclopedia. But when they just want to obstruct the progress, then people get annoyed. For example, if vacuous poet WOULD put energy into writing an article about frauds of various kinds, it could be pretty good. There is a lot of interesting material out there. But he doesn't seem interested in doing anything constructive like that. He just seems to want to fight instead and complain. Who needs it? I have even off and on offered to help creationists write their articles, but no one has ever taken me up on it. They would rather fight instead. I just called

the National Center for Science Education in Berkeley (the people that are fighting to keep evolution in schools) to get some more references for the support article we are writing in draft form. They had 3 good references for me and I asked them if they ever look at Wikipedia articles on evolution, creationism, ID, etc. They said yes and they look at the histories and talk pages and they knew us!! Haha...we are famous! By our user names! Even among the coordinators of national strategy for teaching evolution. Pretty funny huh? They said we are not doing too bad a job on hte articles and they dont look too bad. So there...some feedback...--Filll
