[edit] The Beginning

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Orannis was once the Ninth Bright Shiner, who sought to destroy the entirety of creation. It would have triumphed, but it was bound by the other Seven Bright Shiners into two silver hemispheres. The hemispheres were buried deep beneath the earth, protected by seven bonds: silver, gold, lead, rowan, ash, oak, and bone. One small shard broke off, however, and was eventually retrieved by Hedge, a necromancer, via Chlorr of the Mask.

[edit] The Reawakening

Orannis used its shard to infect young Ancelstierrian Nicholas Sayre, thinking him to be Prince Sameth. Nicholas then became its conduit/avatar, which caused his nostrils to smoke and him to feel faint when the shard awakened. In order for the Destroyer to be released, the hemispheres had to be joined by an immense energy. Therefore, a lightning farm was built across the border in Ancelstierre (since the Destroyer could only rise in a place It hadn't before) and the hemispheres were transported there, where they would become a whole sphere. Electricity collected from a summoned storm catalysed the recombination of Orannis.

[edit] The Rebinding

The hemispheres rejoined and Orannis began to regain its destructive powers. However, another Seven came, led by Lirael, the new Abhorsen-in-Waiting, and attempted to rebind it. They initially failed because the power of the Abhorsen, Clayr, Wallmakers and other binders' blood had been weakened after so many generations. Mogget, once Yrael, the Eighth Bright Shiner, added his voice to the binding bells, and made the binding successful. Orannis was bound anew by Lirael and the other Seven. Afterwards in the short story 'Across the wall' a quote made by a beast hints that Nicholas Sayre could be either a reencarnation of Orannis or perhaps had the shard in him so long that he has taken power from it "I dare not drink much of the blood of the destroyer"
