Operation North Night Final

Operation North Night Final was a joint DR Congo-UN peacekeeper operation in December 2005 to restore peace in the troubled Ituri district in DR Congo. The operation is mainly aimed at fighting the Ugandan rebels stationed there (Allied Democratic Forces/National Army for the Liberation of Uganda) and involves ca. 3,500 Congolese troops, supported by 600 UN peacekeepers using helicopter gunships.

On December 25, a clash killed 40 people, including an Indian UN peacekeeper and three Congolese troops.

On December 26, joint UN-Congolese troops captured the town of Nioka, 80 km north of Bunia. [1] Michel Bernardo from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said up to 11,000 people have been uprooted by the conflict. He added that the operation had helped to bring stability to the region. Lt-Col Frederic Medard, the military spokesman for the UN mission, said on Wednesday December 28 the UN operation had succeeded in dismantling all known ADF camps.
