[edit] Sequels

Several sequels to the original are currently in development:

  • Armed Assault, is Bohemia Interactive's unofficial sequel to the original game and has only been released in Europe at the moment. Despite technically being an unofficial sequel, most of the OFP fan community consider it to be the spiritual successor. It was released in Europe on February 16, 2007. The United States release is scheduled in May.
  • "Game 2", the working title of another sequel to the game is under development by Bohemia Interactive. Few details of the game are known. However, it has been described as "the most realistic combat gaming experience to date" and features "insanely detailed representation of all weapons and equipment". In addition, a 650 sq. km map has been mentioned in a recent interview with a BI representative.
  • Operation Flashpoint 2, is under development by Codemasters. Originally Bohemia Interactive Studio was assigned to develop Operation Flashpoint 2, but since a breakdown in relations between Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive Studio, Codemasters will find another developer to develop an entirely new game and engine from ground up. Very little is known about the progress of Operation Flashpoint 2.

[edit] Publisher

Bohemia Interactive Studio has announced that they do not own the rights to the Operation Flashpoint name, since it belongs to their previous publisher Codemasters. This means that they have no control over the name's use, and so cannot release an official sequel to the game without Codemasters as that game's publisher. As such, it is unlikely that Bohemia Interactive's upcoming game will bear the Flashpoint name. However, Codemasters has announced that they will seek a developer to create Operation Flashpoint 2. OFP2 is the official sequel to Operation Flashpoint, however some speculate that the engine and overall experience will be different from that of Operation Flashpoint not least because a different developer will create the game. Armed Assault and "Game 2" - which is Bohemia Interactive's own spiritual sequel to the original game - claim to use a totally new and improved version of the original Operation Flashpoint engine.
