Operation Eastern Exit

Global Security has an excellent write-up about Operation Eastern Exit.

During the transportation of the evacuees to Muscat, Oman, a child was born onboard the USS Guam.

The USS Guam received a Certificate of Appreciation from the State Department on 9 April 1991. The text reads:

Certificate of Appreciation

U.S.S. Guam

This certificate is presented to the Sailors and Marines of the USS Guam from the Ambassador and staff of the American Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia in recognition of their valiant performance rescuing 281 diplomats and other evacuees from the embassy compound in January 1991. Those saved by the valor of the Guam's officers and men will always be grateful to those who organized and conducted operation eastern exit.
