Opera Atelier

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Opera Atelier is a Canadian opera company featuring performances of 17th and 18th century Baroque opera, ballet and drama. Opera Atelier was founded in Toronto in 1985 by husband and wife duo Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Zingg. The company has chosen to mount primarily operas of the Baroque period featuring period instruments, costuming and sets. Opera Atelier creates original choreography. It has been questioned both in reviews and in dance circles whether the choreography in Opera Atelier productions bears any relation to baroque dance. Many reviewers have cited that it has been highly balleticized.[1]The music for Opera Atelier performances is often provided by Toronto's baroque orchestra, Tafelmusik. The costume designer is Dora Rust-D'Eye.

The company stages two operas per year. Performances by the Opera have been given in New York, Houston, Stuttgart, Bremen, London, Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo. Opera Atelier has also performed in the newly restored theatre at Palace of Versailles in France.

Opera Atelier has received four Lieutenant Governor's Awards.
