The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is one of the recognized Universities in Sri Lanka where students may further their education through distance learning. OUSL's academic programs enable students to combine theoretical study with meaningful real-world learning experiences. It is situated at Nawala, Nugegoda.

The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) was set up for the purpose of providing higher educational facilities to persons above 18 years of age with relevant basic qualifications. Established under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, incorporating with its system the External Services Agency (ESA) and the Sri Lanka Institute of Distance Education (SEIDE) the OUSL commenced its operation in 1980. The present activities of OUSL are based on the provisions of the above Act and Open University of Sri Lanka Ordinance No. 1 of 1990 as amended by the Ordinance No. 12 of 1996.

It has the same legal and academic status as any other national university in Sri Lanka. It is the only recognized university in Sri Lanka where students are able to pursue further education by distance education techniques in keeping with the philosophy of Open and Distance Learning.

STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

PONGAL DAY

The Tamil students of the open university celebrate Pongal day from 1996. Many Tamil students participate many cultural activities on this events. Dramas, Debate, Cultural dance, Mucial programme and many activties on this day. Mr.T.Ilangovan was the first president of the pongal day committee.It still going well and students are maintaining the cultural programme.
